This project was brought to us and was a hornet's nest upon arrival.  The 1984 Porsche 928 S had alrready been turbocharged by a big name 80's tuner on the east coast.  The car was in a very poor condition, having been completely abused by its previous owner.  We had previously taken delivery of a 1982 928 Euro engine which was in remarkable condition, specifically considering the engine was scored down for a song and dance.  There was only one thing to do in this situation, upgrade the Euro  motor and fit it to the 1984 chassis.

The rebuild of the engine consisted of the following:

  • Nikasil plated cylinder bores
  • JE 2618 forged pistons with dish to lower compression to 8.1:1
  • New bearings and seals
  • 1979 US 928 camshafts
  • MAF conversion with signal intercept to massage fuel maps

The turbo system was upgraded with a new front mount intercooler.

The end results were very impressive with the car putting out near to 400 wheel horsepower with just 8 psig of manifold pressure.  The Euro engined 928s were significantly stronger than their US counterparts, specifically because of the heads, valves and camshafts.

The car drives very well and has lots of power.  Since delivery, the owner has installed a megasquirt engine management system and the car has produced in excess of 500 wheel horsepower on about 13 psig.  This was done while still using the old IHI RHB-6 turbos which were installed when this car was originally converted as a brand new 928 back in 1984.
